Melanie - "Up Close & Personal" Songs/Stories

Accompanied by Beau Jarred

Location: Tim McLoone's Supper Club, 1200 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ
Doors open at 6pm, Show starts at 7:30pm

Melanie, who became the voice of an era in one magical instant onstage at Woodstock, has been putting the pieces in order. Pieces of a career, scattered by the winds of experience and assembled again by the force of love into the most personal and brilliant moments of her musical journey.

Melanie is poised to enlighten new generations about what it means to sing with both passion and eloquence, to write at once with intelligence and emotion, and to inspire through song... and nobody does this better than Melanie. Others learned this that night at Woodstock, where as a New York kid barely known outside of the coffeehouse circuit in Greenwich Village, she sang her song "Beautiful People" and inspired the first panorama of candles and cigarette lighters ever raised at a concert event. That, in turn, moved the young singer to write "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)", which sold more than one million copies in 1970 and prompted Billboard, Cashbox, Melody Maker, Record World, and Bravo to anoint her as female vocalist of the year.

Her single "Brand New Key," an infectious romp about freedom and roller skates, topped the charts in 1971.And so her story began. With guitar in hand and a talent that combined amazing vocal equipment, disarming humor, and a vibrant engagement with life, she was booked as the first solo pop/rock artist ever to appear from the Royal Albert Hall to Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Opera House, and later opened the New Metropolitan Opera House in New York, the Sydney Opera House, and in the General Assembly of the United Nations, where she was invited to perform on many occasions as delegates greeted her performances with standing ovations. The top television hosts of all time -- Ed Sullivan, Johnny Carson, and Dick Cavett -- battled to book her. (After her stunning performance on his show, Sullivan goggled that he had not seen such a "dedicated and responsive audience since Elvis Presley.")

Accolades rolled in, from critics ("Melanie's cult has long been famous, but it's a cult that's responding to something genuine and powerful -- which is maybe another way of saying that this writer counts himself as part of the cult too," wrote John Rockwell in The New York Times) as well as peers ("Melanie," insisted jazz piano virtuoso Roger Kellaway, "is extraordinary to the point that she could be sitting in front of us in this room and sing something like 'Momma Momma' right to us, and it would just go right through your entire being.")

In the years that followed Melanie continued to record, continued to tour. UNICEF made her its spokesperson; Jimi Hendrix's father introduced her to the multitude assembled for the twentieth anniversary of Woodstock. Her records continued to sell -- more than eighty million to date. She's had her songs covered by singers as diverse as Cher, Dolly Parton, and Macy Gray. She's raised a family, won an Emmy, opened a restaurant, written a musical about Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane...

She has, in short, lived a rare life. But all of it was just a prelude to what's about to come. "For the first time, I'm not afraid to voice exactly what I feel. I used to feel that I didn't want to say too much, but now I can say anything. I feel like a person who's never been heard. Maybe people think they've heard me, but they never really have. I'm a new artist who is having so much fun with my voice -- a person shouldn't be allowed to have so much fun. I'm the woman I wanted to be when I was sixteen and going for Edith Piaf. It's me -- I'm back."(Written by Robert L. Doerschuk).

Melanie is accompanied by Beau Jarred, a self-taught classical/flamenco concert guitarist and currently residing in Scottsdale, Arizona. He is the youngest child of folk legend Melanie Safka-Schekeryk. Beau Jarred frequently performs alongside his mother whenever she performs all over the world. Likewise, he joined Safka for their second album About You in 1998. Beau Jarred has logged numerous solo records and he frequently performs alone, often as an opening act at Melanie's shows.

Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers "Houserockin' Halloween"

Hosted by 105.7 The Hawk's Tom Cunningham "The Bruce Brunch"

Location: Tim McLoone's Supper Club, 1200 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ
SPECIAL GUEST: DJ Lee Mrowicki

Pittsburgh's JOE GRUSHECKY & THE HOUSEROCKERS, one of Asbury Park's favorites and America's hardest working, blue-collar rock and roll band returns to Tim Mcloone's Supper Club for their 3rd annual "Houserockin' Halloween" show hosted by 105.7 The Hawk's Bruce Brunch host TOM CUNNINGHAM. This is a PARTY so the dance floor will be open and Joe and the guys will be playing originals and covers that you can dance and party to all night long! DJ LEE MROWICKI will be spinning some classic Halloween rock n roll before, in between and after Joe's sets and showing classic Halloween thrillers on the video screens! Come in costume or not, it's totally up to you!

* A Rolling Stone review once echoed the words "they are up there with Springsteen, Petty and Seger". Pretty good company, don't you think? From albums like the Iron City Houserockers' Love's So Tough to Joe's current More Yesterdays Than Tomorrows, the band has changed but the music remains true to their Pittsburgh, Steeltown roots! Hard edged, rock and roll with fine lyrics from the ringmaster, Mr. Joe Grushecky. More than just a "bar band", a Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers show is one of the best shows you will see, hands down!

* Who do you know who has made back-to-back great albums more than 25 years ago and is doing the same thing now. There's Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Neil Young, Springsteen, maybe a few more. He's on that level." - Jimmy Guterman, Runaway American Dream: Listening to Bruce Springsteen.

THE LEGENDARY DUPREES

The Sound is Unmistakable - The Love Songs Unforgettable

Location: Tim McLoone's Supper Club, 1200 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ
Doors Open at 6:30pm, Show starts at 8pm

2012 marked the 50th anniversary of "You Belong to Me" becoming a national hit.

The legend and the legacy of the Duprees continue today...

The Duprees are known the world over for their romantic interpretations of the most beautiful love songs ever written. They have made a career out of giving new life to old hits. Starting out in the early sixties, in Jersey City, New Jersey, The Duprees were discovered by George Paxton of Coed Records and former big band leader. Impressed with their smooth vocal quality, he had them record Jo Stafford's 1950's ballad "You Belong To Me" with Big Band arrangements. It was an instant national hit and the group's first Million Seller. The unmistakable sound was born and the hits kept coming:

1962 You Belong To Me, 1962 My Own True Love, 1963 Gone With The Wind, 1963 Take Me As I Am, 1963 Why Don't You Believe Me, 1963 Have You Heard, 1963 Love Eyes, 1963 It's No Sin, 1963 The Sand And The Sea, 1964 It Isn't Fair, 1966 Let Them Talk & 1966 Exodus
